Motorcycle rider in MNU lecturer's accident remanded for 15 days

The 22-year-old was arrested under a warrant on Monday.

Criminal Court on Tuesday remanded a young man who was riding a motorcycle that hit and seriously injured a Maldives National University (MNU) lecturer, to 15 days.

In a message to the media, police said the 22-year-old who was arrested under a warrant on Monday was remanded to 15 days in police custody when he was produced in court on Tuesday.

Ali Hafeez, 50, was hit by the speeding motorcycle as he was leaving the mosque after his morning prayer on Wednesday. Hafeez sustained serious injuries in the accident and is still being treated at ADK on ventilator support.

The police had earlier said that the driver did not have a valid licence.

Police came under fire for releasing the young man after the accident. Several of Hafeez's relatives and friends have launched a campaign on social media demanding justice for the man who is fighting for his life.
