Pres announces new youth policy with focus on affordable housing

Solih said that the new policies are designed to create a more just and equitable society for all young people in Maldives.

Ruling MDP's candidate for the upcoming presidential election, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Sunday announced his policies for the youth in his second term, including affordable co-living spaces and council housing.

The second part of the MDP manifesto for the election was launched at a rally held in N. Velidhoo on Sunday evening.

The policies for youth are designed to ensure that every youth has the opportunity to pursue higher education, training and skills development along with Islamic morality and to build a productive and prosperous life. They include:

  • Two separate ministries for youth development and sports: This will allow for more focused and specialised attention to the needs of youth in both areas.

  • Establishing a Youth Council to produce Youth Leaders: This council will provide young people with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and contribute to the development of their communities.

  • Creating a co-working Space for the Administrative Management of NGOs: This space will provide NGOs with a convenient and affordable place to operate, which will help them to better serve the needs of youth.

  • Introducing council hosing for socially and economically disadvantaged youth: This will provide affordable housing options for young people who are struggling to make ends meet.

  • Building racing tracks: This will give young people more opportunities to participate in sports and stay active.

  • Establishing More Special Adolescent Clinics and Telemedicine Clinics: This will improve access to healthcare for young people, especially those in rural areas.

  • Building More Sports Facilities in All islands: This will make it easier for young people to participate in sports and stay active.

  • Promoting E-Sports, Martial Arts, Kite Surfing, Racing, Urban Skating and Parkour: This will give young people more opportunities to participate in a variety of sports and activities.

  • Improving Maldives' Instant Payment Gateway and Foreign Payment Systems to Facilitate Digital Business: This will make it easier for young people to start and grow their own businesses.

  • Establishing More Youth Tech Hubs: This will provide young people with the resources they need to learn about and use advanced technologies.

  • Helping Maldives’ ICT Talents and Other Manufacturers to Export, Market and Promote Their Products in Maldives: This will create more opportunities for young people to find employment in the ICT sector.

  • Updating the Human Resource Plan for All islands in the Country and Giving Youth More Opportunities in the Fields They Need in Accordance with the Plan: This will ensure that young people have the skills they need to succeed in the workforce.

  • Producing More Young Scholars through the Islamic Center of Excellence and Assisting Them in Conducting Religious Research: This will help to preserve and promote Islamic culture and values.

  • Establishing More Regional Halls and Arranging Accommodation for Those Going to Study in Those Areas: This will make it easier for young people from rural areas to access higher education.

  • Further Expanding the Free Degree Program to Include Studies from Certificate Level to Degree: This will make it more affordable for young people to get a college education.

  • Further Reviewing the Rules for Loan Assistance for Higher Education and Training and Waiving a Greater Amount of Loan Repayment: This will make it easier for young people to afford the cost of higher education.

  • Increasing the Grace Period for Repayment of Study Loans to at Least One Year: This will give young people more time to repay their student loans.

  • Further Introducing 'Certified Professionals' with Upskilling and Re-skilling Opportunities: This will help young people to stay up-to-date on the latest skills and knowledge.

  • Facilitating Youth Self-employment to Generate Income: This will help young people to start their own businesses and become financially independent.

  • Establishing More Youth Innovation Lab and Youth Entrepreneurship Incubators in Different Parts of the Country: This will provide young people with the resources they need to start and grow their own businesses.

  • Introducing More Special Start-up Loans, Equity Financing and Microfinancing Loans for Youth: This will make it easier for young people to start and grow their own businesses.

Solih said that the new policies are designed to create a more just and equitable society for all young people in Maldives. He called on young people to vote for him in the upcoming election so that he can implement these policies and make a difference in their lives.
