Fonadhoo MP Moosa Siraj announced his support to main opposition presidential candidate Dr Mohamed Muizz, hours after he quit ruling MDP on Monday.

In a letter to MDP chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, Siraj requested to be removed from the party register.

In a tweet Monday evening, Siraj announced his decision to back PPM-PNC's Muizz in the September 9 presidential election. He said MDP would not be able to replicate its win from Laamu atoll in the 2018 presidential election.

Siraj supported President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the January presidential primary of MDP. At the time, he was an MP supporting Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, who faced defeat in the presidential primary.
