Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) on Wednesday submitted membership forms of 10,000 new members to the Elections Commission (EC), as the main opposition party gears up for its internal elections.
The forms of the 10,000 new members were handed over to EC President Fuad Thaufeeq by PNC leader Abdul Raheem Abdulla.
PPM's internal elections are set to take place on October 15.
The elections follow several changes to the party's charter. According to the party, the changes were made to allow former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who is contesting in next year's presidential election, to win the election.
PPM is the second largest party in the Maldives. According to EC website, the party has 33,264 members as of July.
