Three people have been charged with assaulting Hassan Zareer, MP for the Mathiveri Constituency.

Zareer was attacked by a group of five people while he was sitting in a cafe with friends on May 1st. He was hit in the head with a hammer, police said.

Three people have been arrested in the case and the prosecutor general’s office has now filed a motion in the criminal court seeking prosecution of all of them.

The prosecutor general's office said the charges were filed in the Criminal Court on September 19. The charges in this case are:

  • Ibrahim Abdulla who has been previously arrested in several cases of violence, murder and robbery, this time arrested for assault with a weapon causing serious injury to a person

  • Mulan Mohammed, M. Thaajuge/Male - Participating in a fight with a weapon causing serious injury to a person

  • Ahmed Ausham, Dheeframge/Th. Kinbidhoo - Participating in a fight with a weapon causing serious injury to a person

They were arrested and initially released by the Criminal Court. However, the prosecution appealed the order in the High Court, which ruled in August that they should be kept in custody.

The accused, Ibrahim Abdulla, had confessed to stabbing Ali Ishaar, H. Kubra/Male to death in 2007. Ibrahim, who was underage at the time, was charged in the case but the court released him then on the grounds that there was insufficient evidence.
