A young man who was arrested on Sunday for alleged drug trafficking in Male has been remanded for 15 days, police said Tuesday.

A police spokesperson said the 20-year-old man was taken to the Criminal Court on Monday where a judge ordered him to remanded for 15 days.

According to the remand order:

  • He is accused of drug possession, abuse and trafficking

  • There was enough evidence to keep him in custody

  • Police statement and intelligence reports suspect that he was carrying a large quantity of drugs

The man was arrested in a special drug operation by the Drug Enforcement Department (DED) that lasted two hours.

Police closed the road behind ADK Hospital around 8pm on Sunday and reopened after 10pm. Police had searched boxes placed on the street in the presence of a man.

However, the police did not disclose the amount of drugs found on him.

Five DED officers were active in the operation, with two police vehicles.

Atoll Times journalists witnessed him getting arrested by the police, and the items put in evidence bags at the closure of the police operation that lasted two hours within the blocked street.
