
Saleem elected deputy speaker of parliament

MDP MP from Hoarafushi Constituency, Ahmed Saleem (Salle) has been elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament.
Saleem was elected by a margin of 28 votes.
The post of Deputy Speaker of Parliament became vacant following the resignation of The Democrats MP Eva Abdullah. Eva resigned from the post after responding to a motion moved by the MDP to remove her from office in the parliamentary session held on Sunday morning.
The election of a new Deputy Speaker was held by secret ballot in the session held on Sunday evening.
MDP MP from Kaashidhoo Constituency Abdulla Jabir contested for the post of Deputy Speaker along with Saleem. Thus:

Saleem's name was moved by Ihavandhoo MDP MP Mohammed Shifau; Supported by, Kurendhoo MDP Member Abdulgani Abdul Hakeem

Jabir's name was moved by Thoddu MDP MP Hassan Shiyan; Supported by, The Democrats MP for Gahdhoo Ahmed Zahir

Jabir: 23 votes
While MDP MP Hassan Shiyam proposed Jabir's name for the post of Deputy Speaker, Jabir had also contested for the post in the internal elections held in the party's parliamentary group (PG). Jabir received only four votes in the vote, which was taken as a secret ballot among PG members on Sunday evening. With a total of 28 votes, Saleem won that vote as well.
