Parliament on Wednesday extended the ongoing third term of the parliament till December 18.

Speaker Mohamed Aslam on Wednesday proposed to extend the ongoing third term of the parliament till December 18.

Late last month, the parliament passed an extension to the third term of the year as important work, including next year's budget, has not been completed. The extension expires on Thursday.

Aslam, who presided over Wednesday's sitting, said he wanted to extend the term. He proposed to extend the term until December 18.

Aslam said the reason for extending the term is that important matters including the 2024 state budget have not yet been completed and more time is needed to pass them.

In the vote on the proposal, 43 members voted in favour of extending the term, but while no MP objected to it.

Next year's budget is still in the committee stage. In addition, the issue of approval of the new cabinet ministers is still in the committee stage.

According to the rules of procedure of the parliament, parliament sittings are divided into three terms each year:

  • First Term: February to April

  • Second term: 16 May to June

  • Third Term: 16 August to November

If the existing term is to be extended, it should be submitted to the floor for approval.
