
ACP Ali Shujau appointed as police chief
Assistant dommissioners Ali Shujau and Ismail Naveen applied for the post.
President Mohamed Muizzu on Monday appointed Assistant Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau as the Commissioner of Police.
The appointment ceremony was held at the President’s Office Monday morning.
Ali Shujau has served the Maldives Police Service for an extended period and received his Master of Management from the International Islamic University, Malaysia. He is also an FBI graduate at the FBI National Academy Session 277, affiliated with the University of Virginia, United States.
Two candidates applied for the post of commissioner during the period opened for applications from the Assistant Commissioner to the higher ranks. it is:

The police board recommended Shujau for the post.
According to the Police Service Act, the President does not have the direct power to appoint a person to the post of Police Commissioner. According to the law:

The position must be opened publicly for 90 days

The candidate should be an Assistant Commissioner

Applicants will be interviewed by the Police Board and assessed for their abilities

The National Integrity Commission and the Police Professional Standards Command will make a report on them

The report will include whether the commissioner is eligible for appointment, their reputation and see if there is any reason why the commissioner should not be appointed

The President shall appoint a person to the post of Commissioner on the advice of the Minister in charge of Police Affairs after considering the names proposed by the Police Board
