Out of the 9,000 plots scheduled to be allocated under the Binnveriya Scheme, 663 plots have not been handed over yet, according to statistics released by the Housing Ministry.

Although land has been allocated under the 'Binnveriya Scheme' in Hulhumale, Giraavaru and Gulhi lagoons, many of the people who received land have not been handed over the land since the change of government. The government is working to allocate land in accordance with the list announced by the previous government. Thus:

  • Land registry is handed over to those who received land from dredged lands

  • Land acquisition certificates are handed over to those who received land from unacquired areas; because legally, land registrations can only be made for existing land

The Ministry of Housing released a detailed table of the progress of work so far in connection with the land to be allocated in the city area on Sunday. The table shows that:

  • So far, 8,250 plots have been signed and registered

  • 118 people who received land from unacquired land have been handed over land certificates

  • There are still 663 people who have not been handed over their land registry or land acquisition certificates

Number of plots not yet handed over due to various reasons:

  • Land title not given: 303 plots

  • Applicants who have requested to give up the land and does not wish to sign: 16 plots

  • Applicants not signed due to death: 12 plots

  • Unsigned due to unresolved matters: 120 plots

  • Agreement signed and registry being handed over: 212 plots

The ministry noted that many people have been given a second chance to sign the agreement. They say that they are in the process of contacting those who have not been handed over the land so far.

Some of the allottees are worried that the present government may change the way the previous government decided to allot land for various reasons. Some have also demanded that the land be shifted to a place other than where the previous government had allotted it.

President Mohammed Muizzu recently said that those who got land from Giraavaru lagoon under the Binnveriya scheme can transfer their land to Gulhi lagoon if they wish. However, no specific policy has been finalised yet and a decision will be taken soon, he said.
