Govt adds more sectors to business prohibition list for expats

The Ministry issued a notice in the Gazette on Thursday banning foreigners from doing business in 25 areas.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs has released a list of sectors where foreigners are prohibited from doing business in Maldives.

The Ministry issued a notice in the Gazette on Thursday banning foreigners from doing business in 25 areas.

These include:

    Retail business (including online business)

  • 2-

    Wholesale trade (excluding building materials)

  • 3-

    Domestic logistics activities

  • 4-

    Postal and courier services

  • 5-

    Food sales (operating cafes, restaurants and bakeries)

  • 6-

    Rental of equipment (including heavy construction machinery)

  • 7-

    Employment agencies and recruitment services

  • 8-

    Travel agency, tour operators, reservations and other related activities

  • 9-

    Landscaping

  • 10-

    Public administration and defense related activities

  • 11-

    Conducting general tuition classes and Quran classes

  • 12-

    Conducting general clinics

  • 13-

    Computer, general merchandise and household appliance repairs

  • 14-

    Programming and broadcasting work

  • 15-

    Services of legal counsel

  • 16-

    Photography and videography works

  • 17-

    Picnic Island development and operation

  • 18-

    Driving a vehicle on a commercial basis

  • 19-

    Manufacturing and selling souvenirs and handicrafts

  • 20-

    Manufacture of rubber and plastic products

  • 21-

    Manufacture and sale of tobacco products

  • 22-

    Woodworking (excluding furniture)

  • 23-

    Mining and quarrying

  • 24-

    Sand mining

  • 25-

    Forestry
