Maldives to allow all students to enrol in A-Level
23 brand new schools will start teaching A-Level
Education minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu said on Monday that all students who complete grade 10 and O-Levels will be given the chance to study for A-Levels from next year.
Speaking at the CHSE last year's awards ceremony, the minister expressed concern over the decline in the number of students studying for A-Level.
He said the government spends about MVR 40 billion annually on the education of students in Maldives but very few of them graduate from school and reach quality higher education.
“We are failing to pass about 2,500 out of 7,000 students entering grade one to pursue quality university education,” he said.
Shafeeu said the government has decided to expand the A-level opportunities to address the issue. They include:
-
23 brand new schools will start teaching A-Level
-
Students who pass one subject in O-Level will also have the opportunity to study for A-Level
“Hopefully, almost all the children who finish grade 10 will have the opportunity to study for A-Level,” he said.
In Maldives, students are given the opportunity to study for A-Level if they have passed more than five subjects in O-Level. However, the pass rate has recently been reduced to three subjects.
