A new standing committee on housing has been formed in parliament.

Previously, there were 16 standing committees in the parliament, but last week the rules of procedure were amended to create a new committee called the Housing Committee, with a total of 17 committees.

The Speaker of the Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdullah, announced the formation of the committee at the beginning of Wednesday's session. The number of members of the committee and the names of the members to be appointed were approved during voting hours on Wednesday.

Details of the decision are yet to be released.

Rule 134 of the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament sets out the responsibilities of the committee. Some of these include:

  • To study housing issues and advise the Government on possible measures to resolve the problems

  • Identify any changes in national policies on housing and submit them to Parliament

  • To observe the progress of social housing projects implemented by the government and to study the problems identified in connection with the projects and to advise the government to solve them

  • Encourage the government to complete the projects soon

  • Ensure that all citizens have equal access to housing

  • To study the problems faced by the people regarding housing

Previously, the National Development and Heritage Committee had the mandate for issues related to housing.
