President Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday declared Wednesday a public holiday, closing government offices and schools due to monsoon rains.

The announcement was made by the president's spokesperson Heena Waleed in a post on X Tuesday evening.

“The president has declared tomorrow as a public holiday as a relief to students and workers who are facing difficulties in traveling and walking due to heavy rains and bad weather in many parts of the country,” she said.

Heena added that the president assured the people that the government would continue to work day and night with special priority to minimise the damage to their homes and families during the rains.

A record amount of rainfall in the past 24 hours has caused heavy flooding in capital Male and some northern islands.

The army is working to drain the water from the roads and heavy vehicles have been ordered not to drive in the capital city until the water on the roads subsides.
