NDMA urges precautionary measures amid severe weather forecast
The MET office has urged travellers to exercise caution during the holidays, particularly those planning sea travel.
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Tuesday called on the public to take immediate precautions in light of the weather forecast for the next five days.
The advisory comes as preparations for the New Year continue across the Maldives.
A white alert has been issued from Haa Atoll to Kaafu Atoll, warning of heavy rain and thunderstorms until 2 pm on Tuesday. Winds are expected to reach speeds of 40 mph within cloud formations.
In a social media post, the NDMA outlined steps to minimise damage caused by the adverse weather. The recommended measures include:
-
Placing sandbags at doorways to prevent water entry.
-
Moving food and personal belongings in flood-prone areas to higher ground.
-
Using reinforcement equipment for roofs at risk of collapse from strong winds.
-
Securing loose items that may become airborne.
-
Turning off unused electrical appliances.
-
Checking the latest weather updates before sea transport.
-
Ensuring safety and communication systems are functional before traveling.
-
Stocking up on essential items in advance.
The Maldives Meteorological Service attributed the worsening weather to a cyclone and associated low-pressure trough in the southeastern region of the country. The MET office warned that the bad weather is expected to persist until Tuesday, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, rough seas, and potential flooding in some areas. Wind speeds may increase to 50 mph in cloud clusters.
