Over 100 houses flooded in Kulhudhuffushi in monsoon rains

The council provided necessary assistance and food to the people who were evacuated from their homes and transferred to guest houses.

The torrential rainfall in the north of the country on Tuesday evening has caused mass damages in Haa Dhaalu atoll Kulhudhuffushi.

The Maldives Meteorological Services issued an orange alert for the upper north atolls of Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani on Tuesday evening, forecasting thunderstorms and heavy rains in the area.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said in a post on Wednesday that four islands in the three atolls have been affected by the rain, flooding and various kinds of other damage. NDMA said 57 houses in Kulhudhuffushi alone were flooded.

On the matter, Kulhudhuffushi Mayor Ahmed Athif told Atoll Times on Wednesday that more than 100 houses in the island sustained various degrees of damage in the heavy rains of Tuesday evening. Five households had to be evacuated, he said.

Athif said:

  • It rained continuously from 3 pm on Tuesday to 4 am on Wednesday morning

  • The streets were flooded and furniture and belongings in some houses damaged. Assessments are being conducted to determine the damage and a detailed report is being prepared

  • The council provided necessary assistance and food to the people who were evacuated from their homes and transferred to guest houses

  • They will be taken back home after the damage to the houses is repaired

  • The MNDF is working to drain the water from the roads

Other affected islands identified by the NDMA are:

  • Two houses in H.A.Hoarafushi suffered various damages

  • Five houses in Sh.Feevah were damaged

  • Five houses in Sh.Noomara were damaged
