The first shipment of two million canned tuna will be sent to the Palestinian people on Sunday, the President's Office said on Tuesday.

The cans will be shipped in two shipments, presidential spokesperson Heena Waleed told a press conference.

Heena said the shipment will arrive in Palestine in 40 days.

The cans will be sent through the Egyptian Red Crescent. The Egyptian Red Crescent has since decided to hand over the cans to the Palestinian Red Crescent, she said.

Maldives decided to donate two million canned tuna to Palestine in October.

The government said in February that the delay was due to difficulties in sending the cans.

More than MVR 19 million raised by the government's 'Maldivians with Palestine' telethon to provide aid to the Palestinian people, has been sent to UNRWA, the United Nations relief agency for Palestinians in need. The money was sent last month.
