Govt to tow noisy vehicles for a month, seek modification

If it is modified, such as a silencer or a loudspeaker, it should be destroyed under police custody.

Regulations have been amended to allow noisy vehicles to be towed for 30 days and the modifications made to the vehicles to be replaced.

This was done by the transport ministry's amendment to the road vehicles in police custody rules on Monday. The move is part of eight measures the government has decided to take to ensure road safety following the death of a young man in an accident in Hulhumale on Friday.

As per the existing rules, if the vehicle is driven with a modification, the owner of the vehicle will be asked to change it, failing which the vehicle will be towed for 15 days.

In addition, the amendment to the regulations states:

  • Vehicles that have been altered or modified to create fear in the hearts of the public by making the sound of the silencer will be towed for 30 days

  • If the vehicle is modified, the owner will be asked to replace it

  • If it is modified, such as a silencer or a loudspeaker, it should be destroyed under police custody

The next change to the regulation is to shorten the detention period for illegally parked and towed vehicles. They include:

  • Under the previous rules, vehicles seized for irregular parking were detained for 15 days

  • The section has now been amended to hold for a two-day period
