The Hankede Bridge in Addu, built under the previous administration, will be opened to the public on Saturday, according to the Ministry of Construction.

In a social media post on Thursday, the ministry announced that the Hankede Detour Link Road (Hankede Bridge) would be accessible to the public from February 1.

"The project is part of the Addu Road and Storm Water Drainage Development Project and was carried out under the line of credit facility of Exim Bank of India," the ministry stated.

The bridge and the dredged land in the area were officially handed over to the Maldivian government on August 11, 2024, under the loan agreement with Exim Bank of India.

As part of the project, the road was closed to connect the Hankede Bridge to the link road. However, the bridge has remained closed for five months since its completion and handover.

Residents of Addu have raised concerns about flooding during the rainy season and potholes on the sandy road, which they say have caused damage to vehicles and posed safety risks. Many have called for the bridge to be opened without further delay.

The Addu City Council previously stated that the bridge had not been opened due to regulatory procedures, citing information from the Ministry of Transport. The work required to open the bridge is being carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Construction, and the Maldives Police Service.
