A 31-year-old man has been arrested at Velana International Airport in connection with a series of gang-related incidents in Male.

The Maldives Police Service confirmed that the man was taken into custody on suspicion of involvement in violent crimes. He had traveled to Malaysia, where he was denied entry and subsequently returned to the Maldives on another flight.

The suspect has been identified as Hussain Areesh, 31, of Banafsaage, Fuvahmulah.

Reliable sources confirmed that he is linked to a criminal gang operating in the capital. He has been arrested 25 times and formally charged six times. His criminal record includes six cases of assault, two drug-related offences, and one case of theft.

Recent violent incidents in Male have involved weapons, including axes and hammers. One such incident took place on 4 February, when a man on a bicycle was struck in the head with a hammer near Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

Several other individuals have been arrested this week in connection with gang-related violence. Police investigations are ongoing.
