A national security emergency operation has been launched in Male Monday night.
The Maldives Police Service announced the operation in a brief statement on social media.
According to the statement, the operation is being conducted in coordination with the army based on information received by police intelligence. Further details have not been disclosed.
Authorities have stated that updates on the operation will be provided as soon as they become available.
The operation was launched while the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has been holding protests since last Friday, calling for the resignation of President Mohamed Muizzu. The protests are ongoing every night.
