Sajidha Mohamed, wife of President Mohamed Muizzu, on Saturday announced plans to file a civil lawsuit against the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), its chairman Fayyaz Ismail, and activist Mariyam Zubair over allegations made against her son, Umair Mohamed Muizzu.

MDP activist Mariyam Zubair has accused Umair of involvement in the decision to ban vaping in the Maldives. Sajidha addressed these allegations at a press conference held in Malé today.

Denying the claims via written statement briefed a press conference at Dhimyaathu, Sajidha stated that the accusations were politically motivated and had compromised Umair’s dignity and security. She emphasised that her primary duty was to ensure the safety and well-being of her children.

“I am taking these steps in my personal capacity as their mother, without government involvement,” she said, adding that further details would be provided by her legal team.

Sajidha also highlighted an increase in the targeting of children in political disputes and stated that her actions were aimed at addressing this issue for the future.

Following the statement, lawyer Aishath Azima Shakoor confirmed that charges had been filed against Fayyaz Ismail, Mariyam Zubair, and the MDP. She noted that while the case is being pursued as a civil matter, the allegations also have potential criminal implications.

“We intend to file a case against Mariyam Zubair, Fayyaz Ismail, and the MDP. We will not take action against anyone else. Lawyers are reviewing the case,” Azima said.

She declined to disclose further details of the charges but stated that the case would be submitted to the court within the week.
