The Maldives Police Service on Saturday issued a warning to the public regarding a scam being conducted using the name of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) via the Viber messaging platform.

According to the police anti-scam centre, individuals are receiving calls and messages through two separate Viber numbers falsely claiming to represent HDC.

Details shared by police indicate:

  • The scammer's Viber name appears as ‘HDC Housin Development Corpo’.

  • The number 7933128 is being used for calls.

  • The number 7956509 is being used for messages.

Police stated that the individuals behind the scam attempt to impersonate HDC representatives, requesting recipients to verify numbers and ultimately gain access to their Gmail accounts.

Authorities have clarified the following:

  • HDC does not contact residents through Viber accounts.

  • HDC does not request Gmail login credentials, verification details, or access to personal accounts.

Police have urged members of the public not to share personal information or respond to messages or calls from the aforementioned numbers. They have also advised the public to block such numbers and report any suspicious activity.

Police noted that scams using the name of HDC have been reported occasionally in the past.
