he Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard has detained two Sri Lankan fishing vessels for allegedly operating within Maldivian waters without authorisation.
According to the MNDF, the vessels were intercepted during an operation conducted early Monday morning as part of routine patrols to protect the Maldives’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The MNDF did not disclose the exact location within the EEZ where the boats were apprehended.
The vessels, which are of Sri Lankan origin, are currently being transported to Malé, where legal proceedings will be initiated.
Authorities have stated that instances of unauthorised fishing by foreign vessels in Maldivian waters have been reported in the past, and operations to monitor and deter such activities are ongoing.
The MNDF has not released further details regarding the crew or the catch on board the vessels at the time of their arrest.
