The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has denied claims made by the Managing Director of Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) that several components were removed from contractor agreements for the 4,000 housing units under the Gedhoruveriya scheme in Hulhumalé.

FDC Managing Director Hamdan Shakeel, speaking on Sunday, said that construction of the flats—funded through an Indian loan and initiated during the previous MDP government—was nearing completion. He added that certain works, which had been excluded from the original contractor agreements signed under the previous administration, were now being undertaken by the current government.

Hamdan stated that elements such as CCTV systems, building signage, sewerage systems, and garbage chutes had been omitted from the initial agreements. He also noted that other unspecified works had similarly been excluded and were currently being implemented.

In response, the MDP issued a statement on Tuesday rejecting the suggestion that these components were removed from the agreements. The party stated that services such as water, electricity, internet, and CCTV installation were to be jointly provided by the government and FDC following the completion of construction by the contractors.

The MDP said that discussions on implementing these services had been ongoing since 2022 to determine responsibilities and execution. The party noted that the associated costs were to be covered by the government.

“Works can only be deleted from an agreement if they were included in the agreement,” the MDP said, refuting claims that their administration removed any components from the contractor agreements. The party called on the current government to fulfil its responsibility to provide the necessary facilities in the flats.

The Gedhoruveriya housing project comprises 32 towers, with a total of 4,000 flats. These include 1,200 two-bedroom units and 2,800 three-bedroom units. FDC has commenced the process of signing agreements with selected recipients.
