Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on Monday announced plans to designate special lanes for buses and bicycles on some major roads in Hulhumale and ban parking on the satellite town's main road.

HDC has already started painting the lanes on Nirolhu Magu, which is considered the main road in Hulhumale.

HDC said in a statement that it has drawn up a plan to allow four vehicles in four lanes on major roads in Hulhumale, which are 13.2 metres wide. While the change will be implemented on all major roads, the process has been initiated so far on Nirolhu Magu and the road around Central Park.

The changes that are being made to these roads include:

  • A designate bus lane

  • A special lane for bicycles; blue colour is used for this lane

  • A separate lane for motorcycles

  • Ban on parking on Nirolhu Magu

"However, HDC will make arrangements for parking near flats and houses on Nirolhu Magu. The corporation is currently in the process of setting up a number of parking lots across Hulhumale and setting up more parking lots," the statement said.

According to HDC, this is an important initiative to implement global standards on Hulhumale roads and resolve the traffic problem in the wake of the increasing population.

HDC also noted that with the changes, directional signs have been painted on the road to make it easier for pedestrians.

HDC, however, did not give an exact date for the implementation of the changes.
