To relocate the garages being operated in Male to safer neighbourhoods, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has decided to provide land from Hulhumale to operate the garages that are in Male.

HDC issued a statement on Tuesday revealing the details of the allotment of land to relocate the garages operating in Male to Hulhumale.

According to HDC:

  • Garages occupying less than 1,000 sqft will be given 1,000 sqft

  • 1,300 sqft to be allotted to garages larger than 1,000 sqft

  • Garages built on land allotted in Hulhumale can be constructed to two storeys

According to HDC, the existing garages in the city are operated in confined spaces and in the homes of the public. While welding and tinkering are done in these garages, the use of various chemicals leads to dangerous incidents, HDC said.

"Since it is dangerous to do such things in public places, the corporation believes that the allotment of land from Hulhumale for the operation of garages will be a great solution to this problem," the statement said.

Ten expatriates died in the fire that broke out earlier this month at a garage on the ground floor of M. Nirufehi, a labour quarter in the area between Iskandharu Magu and Koarukendi Magu, Male.

Speaking to the media after arriving in the area, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stressed on the need to shift garages from residential areas. He said the government was planning to shift the garages to Thilafushi and Gulhifalhu.
