President Mohamed Muizzu said on Tuesday that all dredging required for housing land in the Greater Malé Region will be completed by March or April next year.

Speaking at a meeting with residents of Machchangolhi ward at Ameeniyya School, the President said the government’s housing pledge will be delivered.

“My promise to the people, the housing promise, is a promise that will be fulfilled. It will be fulfilled. A lot of work has already been done,” he said.

He said land formation is ongoing and expressed confidence that all areas earmarked for reclamation will be dredged within the planned timeframe.

The President also provided updates on active dredging projects:

  • One additional dredgers will be deployed on Wednesday to speed up work on Hulhumalé Phase 3. The work will continue without interruption and is expected to be completed next month.

  • A bund wall will be installed in Giraavaru Falhu lagoon to begin land reclamation. Once dredging in Hulhumalé Phase 3 is completed and the environmental impact assessment is approved, the dredgers will move to Giraavaru Falhu. Work is scheduled to begin in early January and finish in early March.

  • Uthuru Thila Falhu will be dredged as previously announced in the presidential address.

President Muizzu said he expects the land and flat allocations to be resolved within his current term.

“I am sure that the problem will be solved for everyone over the age of 18 who has no housing and no first home,” he said.

The government announced on Republic Day that 15,000 plots will be allocated in Rasmale and 7,000 flats in the Malé area as part of the housing programme. Applications will open in January.
