The government has suspended the registration of vehicles in the names of foreign nationals as amendments are being made to road traffic laws and regulations.
Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen said on Monday via X that the decision aims to address congestion issues in various parts of the country, particularly in the Malé area.
The minister said work is underway to revise the relevant laws and regulations governing road traffic.
In July last year, the Ministry of Transport amended the rules to require vehicles other than two-wheelers to obtain ministry approval before being imported into Maldives.
A completely new bill has now been submitted to replace the existing Road Traffic Act.
