Teacher charged over sexual abuse of students in Meemu Atoll

A health and physical education teacher at Meemu Atoll School has been charged with offences related to the sexual abuse of students, the Prosecutor General’s Office said.
The charges have been filed against Shuaib Abdulla, of Saadhage, M. Kolhufushi. The case was submitted to the M. Kolhufushi Magistrate’s Court on 21 January.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, Shuaib has been charged with five offences.
The charges include:

Two counts of sexual conduct with a child in a position of trust, each carrying a basic sentence of between 15 and 18 years in prison

Two counts of observing a sexual act with a child in a position of trust, each carrying a basic sentence of between 15 and 18 years in prison

One count of possession of nude material, carrying a basic sentence of one month and six days in prison
The prosecutor’s office said the charges relate to the sexual abuse of two students whom Shuaib taught at Meemu Atoll School and to showing them a nude video.
If convicted on all counts, he faces a minimum sentence of 60 years, one month and six days in prison, the Prosecutor General’s Office said.
