The Malé City Council has announced the closure of lagoon areas along the northern side of the capital as construction resumes under the Boduthakurufaanu Magu development project.

According to the council, road construction will begin this Saturday, requiring the lagoon stretch from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to Fishermen’s Park to be closed until the work is completed and the area reopened.

Further closures will follow in phases. The area from Fishermen’s Park to Jetty No. 5 will be closed from 30 March, while the stretch from Jetty No. 5 to Izzudheen Jetty will close from 17 April until construction is completed.

The project involves extending the harbour quay wall outward to widen Boduthakurufaanu Magu, one of Malé’s main roads. The development is divided into five segments, with two already completed and opened before Ramadan.

Authorities said the lagoon area on the northern side of Malé would be closed in line with the project schedule due to construction activities.

However, the council has not yet announced alternative arrangements for vessels currently using the affected zones. The stretch from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to Jetty No. 5 is heavily used by atoll ferries and speedboats.

The project, awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), began in August last year and is scheduled to be completed within 455 days at a cost of MVR 144 million.
