4 more measles cases detected in Malé area, bringing total to 15
Measles cases began reappearing in the Greater Malé Area early last month after the disease had previously been declared eradicated in the Maldives.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported four additional cases of measles in the Greater Malé Area, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Maldives this year to 15.
The agency announced on Tuesday that the new cases were identified during the past week.
Measles cases began reappearing in the Greater Malé Area early last month after the disease had previously been declared eradicated in the Maldives.
According to the HPA, the four new infections recorded in the Malé region increased the national total to 15 cases.
In response to the rise in cases, a dedicated help desk has been established at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) to provide assistance and guidance to individuals suspected of having the disease.
The HPA noted that measles is currently being reported in several countries, including countries in the region. The agency said common symptoms include fever accompanied by a red skin rash and urged anyone experiencing such symptoms to seek medical attention promptly.
Health authorities have also advised the public to take preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection and transmission.
These include seeking medical care if symptoms worsen and wearing a mask when visiting a healthcare facility, avoiding public transport when unwell, and remaining in isolation after testing for suspected measles until results are confirmed.
The HPA further advised people to maintain personal hygiene, ensure vaccinations are up to date, and avoid public gatherings or crowded places if they develop symptoms associated with the disease.
