President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced on Monday that the salaries of health workers will be increased from May.
In his presidential address at the inaugural session of the parliament for the year, President Solih highlighted the government's plans to make changes in the salaries of employees in different sectors.
The president said that the salaries of health workers will be hiked in May, while MVR 493 million has been allocated for salaries of health workers in the state budget approved for the current fiscal year.
Last year, when the salaries of teachers were hiked, people were not satisfied with the fact that the change did not include the salaries of university lecturers.
Delivering his fifth presidential address, which is also the last of his first term in office, President Solih said there would be a positive change in the salaries of the university staff from next month.
Later, he announced that the salaries of health workers would also be hiked from May onwards.
"Also, all existing employees who have not received 35% allowance in government ministries will be eligible for this allowance from May 1," he said.
He said that once the salaries are equal, all the judicial, Imams, Mudhims and civil servants as a whole will be involved.
'Minimum wage is a major positive change'
The implementation of minimum wages last year, he said, was a big boost for the local workers. He pointed out that a positive change had come to more than 35,000 workers.
He said the change in service charges in the tourism sector since September has also improved the living conditions of employees and their families in the sector.
