A special committee has been formed to verify the authenticity of the applications for plots and flats under the ‘Binnveriyaa’ and ‘Gedhoruveriyaa’ schemes.

The planning ministry took to Twitter on Wednesday and said that the Gedhoruverinnge Committe has been constituted to evaluate the applicants for the two schemes and decide who will be allotted land and flats.

The committee comprises:

  • 1-

State planning minister Akram Kamaluddin (Chairperson)

  • 2-

State finance minister Anas Abdul Sattar (Co-chair)

  • 3-

    Deputy economic minister Mariyam Nazima

  • 4-

    Deputy planning minister Aishath Rashida

  • 5-

    Mohammad Arif

The first meeting of the committee was held on Tuesday, the ministry said.

Applications for plots and flats under the two schemes ended on October 15 and around 36,000 applications were received.

  • For land plots: 15,164 applications

  • For three-room apartments: 14,489 applications

  • For two-bedroom apartments: 6,208 applications

Last month, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had announced that the government would provide land and flats by the end of the term, in line with the government's promises to address the housing crisis faced by the people of Male.

In addition to the land and flats allotted in Hulhumale, the government has promised to provide land to the people of Male by reclaiming Gulhifalhu and Giraavaru lagoon. Earlier, President Solih had announced that 1,000 houses would be allotted in Gulhifalhu and 2,000 in Giraavaru.

The government has already allocated funds for these projects. Three European banks have secured loans worth 101 million euros (MVR 1.6 billion) for the joint venture. A portion of the money needed to acquire land in the Giraavaru lagoon was allocated by selling a lagoon and an island in Noonu Atoll for USD 27 million (MVR 416 million).

In his presidential address on February 6, the President had announced that the number of houses allotted to the people of Male would be increased. He, however, did not elaborate.
