Hulhumale lagoon has become a dangerous place as some vessels docked there have drifted away.
Pictures of boats with no crew drifting in Hulhumale Marina Bay lagoon have surfaced on social media on Sunday.
In one photo, a vessel that has been drifting can be seen approaching a liveboard vessel anchored in Hulhumale lagoon to the point of grazing and colliding with each other.
In response, Urbanco urged commuters to be cautious.
"We would also like to inform that marine police are working to resolve the issue," Urbanco said.
A source with knowledge of the matter, who spoke to Atoll Times on the condition of anonymity, said that it was being done deliberately.
According to him:
-
There has been tension between speedboat owners and liveaboard vessel owners over the recent anchoring of speedboats in Hulhumale lagoon
-
Anchoring ropes were cut off in the beginning as an act of vandalism.
-
That's why boats are drifting in the lagoon
-
Nobody knows who the perpetrator is
The police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
