The Commissioner of Police (CP) Mohamed Hameed has decided to retire on the 11th of next month before the new government takes over.
Hameed made the announcement in a message to the police's internal media group on Saturday. When asked about the message, Hameed said he had decided to retire to give the new government an opportunity to appoint a person to the post.
"And to support the preparations for that. I am thinking of retiring on November 11," CP Hameed said.
The message highlighted the difficulties and challenges he faced during his tenure in office, from the time he was dismissed from the police service in 2012 to the change of government in 2018 and his appointment as CP.
As such, Hameed said:
-
He rejoined the police service after the events of 2012, but did not want to hold the post of CP in 2018 due to the events that passed
-
He wanted to hand over the post to Senior Deputy Commissioner Ibrahim Latheef
-
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was advised to do so
However, the attempt failed and he "had to wear the CP-hat," Hameed said.
President Solih, who was defeated in the September presidential election, appointed Hameed as the CP on March 26. Before that:
-
He was fired on February 7, 2012, after the change of government of then President Mohammed Nasheed, on charges of leaking confidential police information
-
In December 2018, the Supreme Court ruled to reinstate him
-
He was promoted to the post of Deputy Police Commissioner when he rejoined the force in December
-
He was the acting police commissioner until his appointment as CP in 2019.
