The opposition Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has filed a motion in Parliament alleging that the salary increase of police and soldiers is being delayed.
The issue was moved by MDP MP Hussain Mohammed Didi on Wednesday. The motion was passed by 22 votes.
Former President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih's administration decided to increase the salaries of police and military personnel and put in place a framework for it. Thus:
-
The salary increase was scheduled to start in January this year
-
However, this government has decided to delay the increase in the salaries of the police and army; the framework will be implemented from March
Doubling the salaries of the police and army is a presidential pledge.
Member Hussain’s emergency motion said:
-
Earlier this month, the President said the next two or three months will be very difficult economically in his visit to Thaa atoll
-
The MP expressed concern that such a statement on the economic situation implies further delay in the fulfilment of his pledge to increase the salaries of the army and police
Noting that the servicemen of the two institutions are working hard day and night for the safety of the people, Hussain said the presidential pledge to increase the salaries of the army and police should be expedited. He also noted that the salary structure sent by the previous government is not twice as high as what the President promised.
