Thoddoo MP Hassan Shiyan on Tuesday submitted a resolution to the parliament calling for an end to discrimination in electricity tariffs in the atolls and the Male’ region.
Shiyan stated that there are differences in the billing of electricity services provided by the State Electric Company (STELCO) and Fenaka to the atolls. He said that the differences pose major difficulties for small businesses in the atolls.
Shiyan said businesses are complaining about the high cost of electricity in the atolls which drains their profits. He shared the electricity difference in the tariffs between Male and the atolls:
Male:
-
0-100 units - MVR 3.30
-
101-300 units - MVR 3.35
-
301-500 units - MVR 3.65
-
501-600 units - MVR 4.00
-
601-3,000 units - MVR 4.35
-
3001-10,000 units - MVR 5.75
-
Above 10,000 units - MVR 6.65
Atolls:
-
0-100 units - MVR 3.25
-
101-200 units - MVR 3.75
-
201-300 units - MVR 4.75

Shiyan said that if the electricity tariffs in Male and the atolls cannot be matched, it is important to ease taxes levied on businesses in the atolls. He had called for the relevant authorities to be brought-in to the parliament’s State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Committee and impressed that the issue be resolved.
