The government has announced that from 1 January, street and public lighting in all cities and islands will be billed at the domestic electricity rate.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu made the announcement on X on Monday, stating that both Fenaka Corporation and the State Electric Company (STELCO) will apply domestic tariffs instead of the current commercial rate.
He said the change would allow local councils to reduce expenditure on electricity and redirect funds towards other municipal services.
According to STELCO, the domestic rate is MVR 1.25 per unit for usage below 100 units, while the commercial rate for the same consumption is MVR 3.25 per unit.
