Immigration and police on Tuesday arrested a Bangladeshi man who allegedly took cats from various parts of capital Male and used their meat to make food.

Immigration on Monday asked Arafat Hossain, 32, to attend its centres.

Immigration controller Mohamed Shamman Waheed said Arafat had been found from a salon and taken into police custody.

Police said that Arafat was arrested around 10:30 am.

Police have also launched an investigation into the incident.

Immigration said Arafat was also living in Maldives illegally.

Arafat has been talked about on social media for some time. Some people have videotaped him trying to catch cats in the parking lot behind the Marybrown restaurant in Male.

The animal welfare ministry took to its social media on Monday evening saying that an individual had shared the story of the cat-chaser with the ministry Monday morning. The matter was promptly reported to the police, the ministry said.

Some people on social media have accused the man of cooking and selling cat meat. It is linked to the decapitated cat parts found near his home as well as the constant sound of cats crying in the same area. He makes food like burgers at his home and sells them.
