The opposition Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) on Sunday accused the government of hiring 4,500 political employees.
Speaking at a press conference at the MDP office on Sunday, the previous government's Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer said that these include political employees hired by state owned companies.
Ameer on Sunday said that 2,500 political employees have been added to government companies and salary expenditure has increased by at least 15%.
“For the first quarter of this year alone, the number of employees has increased by 8%,” he said.
"A college in the name of nationalism has been built and 50 consultants have been hired. There are more than 2,000 people hired for political positions and more than 2,500 people hired for companies”.
According to the MDP:
-
The current salary expenditure for government companies is higher than at the end of last year
-
The biggest salary spenders are Fenaka, MACL, MTCC and Maldivian airline
