Police probe BML card removal coup partners

Police did not give further details, and no action has been taken against anyone in connection with the case.

The police on Sunday said it is trying to identify those they need to take action in the investigation into allegations of attempts to change the government in the wake of the national bank's decision on 

BML announced on Sunday morning that it would not allow foreign transactions via their Rufiyaa accounts. The decision sparked public outrage and criticism of the government and the bank, and BML rescinded the decision that evening on the orders of the central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority.

President Mohamed Muizzu and other senior government officials have described the bank's actions in this regard as a "financial coup", saying the bank acted contrary to the government's consultations. The President said that as per the provisions of the Constitution, action will be taken against those found guilty.

Police began investigating the alleged attempt to change the government in connection with the BML decision on Monday night.

Police have shared the details of the investigation with the media on Wednesday. Thus:

  • All the required information is being gathered

  • Conducting detailed research on all matters to be considered

  • Identify if there is anyone specific that requires action to be taken

  • Perform all duties required during the investigation phase

Police did not give further details, and no action has been taken against anyone in connection with the case.

Police did not name anyone in the case they are investigating, but said that day that somebody was giving wrong information to the public by holding a press conference to coincide with the decision. FOllowing this:

  • Some ministers have accused BML of taking the decision in collaboration with the opposition

  • The BML's decision coincided with a press conference held by political parties on the government's financial situation, police said.
