Maldives National Party (MNP) decided on Wednesday to hold their primary elections on 14 January to elect a candidate for the upcoming 2023 presidential election.

The decision was taken at the first meeting of the MNP's National Steering Council held Wednesday evening.

However, no further details are available on the decision.

So far, only MNP president and Dhangethi MP Mohamed Nazim has expressed interest in running for president.

Speaking at the MNP's first congress in September, Nazim outlined the party's goals and goals for next year's presidential election. Nazim listed some of the policies that would be adopted during the MNP regime:

  • Seeking public consultations on everything

  • Enhancing the potential of the locals

  • Increasing revenue generating practices in atolls

  • Development of atolls on par with Male

  • Providing equitable housing

  • Priority in addressing drug and other social issues

In addition, Nazim, speaking on a television programme earlier this year, said that given his service to the country, he believed that he was going to take over as president next.

Nazim, who served as defence minister under former presidents Mohamed Waheed and Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, had been with the Jumhooree Party (JP) along with Thimarafushi MP Abdulla Riyaz, who is currently in the top leadership of the MNP before the formation of the MNP in mid-2021. They worked with JP to bring this government to power in 2018.

The MNP, however, has been critical of many of the government's policies.
