**HRCM Limits Term for Whistleblower Protection Unit Head to Two Terms**

The head of the Human Rights Commission's (HRCM) Whistleblower Protection Unit can now serve a maximum of two five-year terms.

The extension was made through the third amendment to the Whistleblower Protection Unit Regulation, which was published in the government gazette on Thursday.

The regulation, initially effective from January 2020, had been amended once before in December of that year, allowing the head of the Whistleblower Protection Unit to serve a five-year term. The latest amendment includes further clarification on the term limits:

  • The term of office is five years.

  • The commission now has the authority to reappoint the head for a second term if deemed appropriate.

  • An individual can serve a maximum of two terms.

The new regulation took effect last Thursday.

The Whistleblower Protection Unit operates under the 'Whistleblowers Protection Act' at the HRCM. It is responsible for receiving information from whistleblowers and forwarding it to relevant investigative bodies.

The unit also conducts necessary investigations into the information submitted, aiming to provide protection for whistleblowers as outlined in the law.
