Maldivian student reported missing in Malaysia in police custody
According to Afeef, CCTV footage showed Usaid at the Maldivian High Commission at approximately 4 pm on Sunday.
Malaysian police have taken into custody Usaid Ibrahim Afeef, a Maldivian student who was reported missing earlier this week.
Usaid, who is studying in Malaysia, was last seen on Tuesday. His family sought public assistance on Monday. On Tuesday, the family stated that CCTV footage confirmed Usaid’s safety, though they had not yet made contact with him.
Sources told Atoll Times that Usaid is currently in police custody. The reason for his arrest remains unclear.
Usaid’s father, former senior customs and immigration official Ibrahim Afeef, wrote in a Facebook post that the Maldivian High Commission in Malaysia and police had been searching for his son.
"However, Usaid has not met us yet. Hopefully, we will hear from him soon," Afeef stated.
According to Afeef, CCTV footage showed Usaid at the Maldivian High Commission at approximately 4 pm on Sunday. As the High Commission was closed, Usaid was unable to meet anyone and remained there for about an hour.
Footage also confirmed that Usaid left the premises with his wallet and student card, which identifies him as a student at Monash University. When the High Commission reopened on Monday, officials reviewed the footage and confirmed that Usaid was safe at that time.
