Police said on Sunday that all the suspects arrested in connection with the foiled terror attack, which was planned to kill many people using explosives, have been remanded with five out of them ordered to be detained until the end of trial.

Police and the MNDF launched a massive operation on 11 November after receiving intelligence about the terror attack, which was being planned by a group claiming to be supporters of the international terrorist group ISIS. On Sunday, police revealed the age of the 14 people arrested during the raid and their remand periods.

Those arrested during the raids in Male, Addu and K. Guraidhoo consist of people aged between 18 and 46 years. Those remanded to judicial custody till the end of the trial are:

  • A 20-year-old

  • A 27-year-old

  • A 30-year-old

  • A 35-year-old

  • A 37-year-old

The rest have been remanded in police custody for 15 days and 30 days respectively:

  • A 19-year-old man (30 days)

  • Two 27-year-old men (30 days)

  • A 28-year-old man (30 days)

  • An 18-year-old man (15 days)

  • Two 33-year-old men (15 days)

  • A 35-year-old man (15 days)

  • A 46-year-old man (15 days)

Police had earlier said that if the attack had been successful, there was a high chance that many people would have gotten killed. Therefore, the joint operation was carried out by the police and the army, which, according to the police, was a "disruptive" operation.

"The purpose of this operation by the police and the military is to foil the conspiracy to endanger the lives of a large number of civilians," police inspector Uswath Ahmed told a press conference held at Iskandar Koshii on Monday.

Since this is a case that is still under investigation, the police are yet to ascertain the exact location planned for the attack or whether the attack was aimed at a particular group of people. However, the police did say:

  • Searches found that foreign nationals were involved in planning the attack

  • Explosives were recovered from houses and is now being probed as to their nature and composition
