The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has brought in the first shipment of rock boulders required for Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) projects.
The shipment, which arrived on Friday, marks the start of large-scale imports planned to support ongoing government infrastructure works.
According to MTCC, the first shipment included 56,450 tonnes of rock boulders. The company plans to import a total of 2.5 million tonnes before the end of the year to meet the requirements of PSIP projects awarded to it.
President Mohamed Muizzu announced in January that the government would bring in rock boulders in bulk to address shortages that had delayed several development projects.
During a visit to Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll earlier this year, the President said that some infrastructure projects had been stalled due to the lack of materials, including rock boulders, needed for coastal and land reclamation works.
MTCC has not disclosed the source of the boulders or the total cost of the import.
