Bad weather is usually observed during the beginning of the north east monsoon.

The north east monsoon is expected to begin in the Maldives by the end of this month and the weather is likely to worse during that period, the national meteorological service (MET) said on Wednesday.

An official from the MET office told Atoll Times that the dry monsoon is unlikely to start for the next 10 days.

Bad weather is usually observed during the beginning of the north east monsoon.

  • During those days, the seas will be rough with strong winds

  • It will rain heavily

  • Some islands will be hit with sea swells

  • Usually, the bad weather spell extends until mid-or-late January

Schools will close for its second term break in late December and reopen in early January.

Summary of Met Office statistics from the past 12 years:

  • 1-

July experienced more rainfall than December.

  • 2-

Wind was stronger in July than December, and even stronger in June

  • 3-

Wind speed determines how rough the sea is, so the wind readings dictate that July has more rough sea

  • 4-

There were more sunny days (23 days) in December compared to July

Next three days will be rough

The rain clouds that are forming near Sri Lanka are likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm Wednesday evening.

However, the MET office said that it will not have a direct impact on the Maldives and that the storm's direction is far away from the Maldives. It said the impact would be most pronounced in places like Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

However, due to the cyclone, the winds in the Maldives are expected to be slightly stronger from Thursday, the office said. The impact will be more pronounced in the central and southern atolls.

"These areas are likely to experience strong winds for the next three days," the official said.
