More than 500 vehicles parked in Male have been fined for being parked on main bus routes, hindering bus traffic, police announced Sunday.

Mini bus services were launched in Male under the government's nationwide Raajje Transport Link (RTL) system last week. Changes have been brought to the traffic flow and parking areas on the major streets of Male to facilitate the public transport service. Police had gone out onto the street in large numbers and removed the vehicles obstructing bus routes, and now they continue to issue fines for the vehicles that are parked the same way.

The minibuses cover all four wards of the city shuttling via four main roads:

  • Majeedhee Magu

  • Ameenee Magu

  • Sosun Magu

  • Orchid Magu

Police efforts to implement the parking ban on the mini bus route have resulted in:

  • Parking violation stickers issued for 538 vehicles

  • 30 motorcycles towed

  • One car towed

In response to efforts to implement the new changes, the police said:

  • Police will be active on minibus routes to resolve traffic issues

  • Parking violation stickers will be issued on vehicles parked on the bus route

  • Vehicles parked in spots that hinder the bus routes will be towed if necessary

Mini bus service:

  • The bus service will be available from 5:45am to 12:15pm, every day of the week.

  • 40 bus stops have been established on the bus routes, at maximum 10 minute walking distances and buses will approach each stop every 10 minutes.

  • 18 minibuses will be shuttling in Male city, each bus will have 20 seats capacity, additional 10 passengers standing room, ramps for wheelchair access and are fully air conditioned.

  • Bus ticketing is done online; QR tickets are available through the RTL website, and the RTL app can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play Store.

  • Children under the age of three, school children in uniform, people with disabilities and senior citizens over 65 years of age can travel free of charge at any time on the minibus.
