A Chinese company has been awarded a contract to set up solar-powered ice production plants in four islands.
At a ceremony held at Moonimaa lounge on Sunday, the environment ministry signed an agreement for the project with China's INSTEC Import and Export Company Limited (IIC).
The company was entrusted with the task of completing the project within eight months for MVR 1.77 million.
The islands where the ice plants will be built are:

N. Landhoo
-
Th. Buruni
-
Th. Madifushi
-
Th. Villufushi
With a 15-tonne ice plant in each island, 30 tonnes of storage will be set up under the scheme, the environment ministry said.
According to the ministry, this is an initiative of the government to achieve the 2030 net zero target announced by the Maldives.
